About the Department

Our General Surgery Department has a team that stands itself above par in maintaining quality education and operative care. MMC hospital is privileged to have renowned consultants with immense teaching experience and acquired advanced training in newer modalities of surgical treatment protocol like Laparoscopic surgery.

Academics to PGs has been much another area of sunshine , where Surgery Department of MMC provides expertised training and masterly tutorials in various training required for a PG .We are proud to have our training has moulded most of the students to be successful and capable enough to stand as the strong pillar in their own walks of life. We also provide round the clock cross departmental consultations, Emergency and OPD services.

Our clinical focus has been:-

  • Lap Hernia repair – IPOM ,TEP , TAPP
  • Thyroid Surgery including malignancy
  • Head and Neck surgeries
  • Parotid Gland surgery including malignancy
  • All Breast surgeries including Carcinoma breast
  • All Abdominal surgeries including hollow viscus and solid organ pathologies ( Benign and malignant)
  • Open Inguinal mesh Repair surgeries for Hernias
  • Vac Dressings for Bed sores
  • Hemorrhoidectomy, Fistula and fissure in ano repair, perineal abscess drainage

The surgical and emergency trauma team has been in best optimised working atmosphere in this Malabar region and has been successfully engaged in the best trauma care protocol.

The Department has been providing training to undergraduate and postgraduate (MS) and (DNB) General Surgery students. Contribution is also extended to teaching curriculum of BDS, para medical and nursing courses run by the institution.

  • Creation of divisions to enhance surgical sub-specialization & excellence in patient care
  • Adoption of newer teaching methodology: computer generated modules, skill lab, OSCE
  • Up-gradation of cadaveric teaching for various levels of training – Cadaveric Dissection and Real time Surgical dissection
  • Expanding areas such as multi-visceral organ transplantation
  • Establishment of Minimal Invasive Surgery Training Center
  • Annual ATLS programs for new House surgeons and Post graduates

Our Department in the CORONA Era

Our department has risen to the COVID situation and has implemented online Zoom, Google meet classes for UG students.

Inorder to assess their follow up of the class schedule, weekly Quiz via Kahoot and daily assignment submission after every clinical session has been added to student teaching protocol.

Surgeons are taking part in the regular care of COVID patients in our own COVID centre in the MMC medical college campus. Utmost care and COVID testing protocol is being strictly followed during the patient care.

Daily Academic Schedule for Surgery PGs (2020 Admission)

8. 00 am to 9.00 am ��Pre rounds

PGs will have a self assessment of the ward patients and formulate their own management strategies. Also looking after drug list and charts of the patient to optimise the patient care.

9 am to 11 am �� Rounds / Ward work

Faculties will look into the various aspects of patient care. Beside demonstrations and case discussions pertaining to the progress of each patient. Dressing and minor surgical procedures will be carried on under guidance.

11 am to 12pm �� Presentation by PG students

Regular Journal clubs, Clinical Case presentations and Topic discussions are carried out on daily basis.

Monthly Mortality meets – as part of surgical audit. To discuss the pitfalls and improvements regarding the patient care and to improvise in the future ward and departmental works.

12pm to 1pm � Continue their Ward work and academic training schedules

5pm to 6pm � Evening rounds by PG Students

To reassess the patient and conduct mini teaching discussion for the house surgeons. Help them to plan treatment and follow up with concerned orders for each surgical case.

Concerned PG will be posted for Casualty duty 8 am to 8am (next day) according to the duty schedule

Surgical Training

The starting of every batch including PGs and HS have the opportunity to attend basic ATLS course and Suturing – Anastomoses skill workshop.

In 2020, it was conducted by Dr Santhosh (Surgical Gastroenterologist) along with General Surgery Department. Over 150 students participated in this live workshop which lasted for 3 days.

Department is also equipped with Laparoscopic training set and console for PGs to get hold of the basic skill sets.

Research

Many well-designed research trials and publications have been conducted by the various faculties in the department involving all the core areas like general surgery, breast & endocrine surgery, minimally invasive surgeries, morbid obesity and bariatric surgery, peripheral vascular diseases, venous disease and Lymphedema.  We are training the PG students in conducting researches in the form of thesis publications. The outcomes of many of the research programs have been presented in leading national & international conferences and published in leading surgical journals.
